BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #115 - Merridale Cowichan Spiced Rhumb

Cowichan Rhum

DISTILLERY NOTES

A rhumb line is an imaginary line on the earth's surface used as the standard method of plotting a ship's course on a chart. It is a path with a constant bearing.  Our 4 year path to make rum from BC grown products led us to a method using BC honey, fermented, distilled two times in our small batch copper still, and then aged in oak barrels at our farm in Cobble Hill. We kept our bearings through years of challenges to get to this truly Cowichan version of rum.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I have gone into depth about BC “Rum” before but wanted to dive in with the Merridale Distillery Cowichan Spiced Rhumb. Rich with stone fruit, spicy vanilla and hints of smoky oak with the addition of fragrant and aromatic psices like clove, cinnamon and nutmeg. Want to throw this is with classic rums in a blind tasting to see if people can pick it out.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Light copper with golden edges

Nose - Stone fruit, spiced vanilla and toasty oak

Taste - Stone fruit, smoky vanilla, toasted caramel, hints of oak and aromatic Christmas spice

Finish - Round vanillas and spicy oak, just a subtle smoke undertone

Best Enjoyed - Hot buttered Rum

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Something I have never tasted from Odd Society which doesn’t happen often. Their elderflower is floral and aromatic with rich elderflower pop and hints of melon. Not overly sweet so watch your balances in cocktails, I’d grab a bottle of bubbles and do a gorgeous spritz.

BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #103 - Okanagan Spirits Taboo Absinthe

DISTILLERY NOTES

Using the same traditional distilling methods and original recipes of the early 19th Century, Okanagan Spirits created Taboo Genuine Absinthe. One of the key ingredients to the smoothness of our Absinthe is that it is created from a neutral fruit alcohol (gluten-free). Fruit alcohol gives our Taboo a much softer, less aggressive finish than alcohol made from grain.

No artificial flavors or essences are used in the production of any of the Okanagan Spirits products, and to give Taboo its unique aroma and taste we use whole herbs that consist of Fennel, Anise, Lemon Balm, Hyssop, Petite Wormwood and Grande Wormwood. All of these herbs grow wild in our back garden and can be readily found in many meadows and grasslands within Western Canada.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

The OG absinthe in Canada is the Okanagan Spirits Taboo. Sweet licorice with complex dry and aromatic botanicals. I love this 1:3 with water to really lengthen out the flavors. Please bring back the Gold, it was epic!
