BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #156 - DeVine Distillery Sloe Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

By adding wild sloe berries (a tiny member of the plum family) to our classic gin, we’ve brought an old English tradition to Canada. The result is a full-strength spirit that’s tart but with a delicious richness and depth of flavour backed by a subtle berry sweetness.

A bounty of flavours dominated by dried fruits, black liquorice, candied orange, sugar plums, and lavender. Balanced by traditional gin botanicals of juniper and coriander, fresh spruce tips and white pepper.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I’ve tasted so much stuff that Devine Distillery don’t make anymore and have forgotten to taste some stuff they do make. The Sloe Gin is herbaceous, berry medicinal with complex and complimenting botanicals. If you use this in a Sloe Gin Fizz, watch your sweetness and this is dry, full on sloe berry boldness.

Alcohol - 42% / 84 proof

Color - Light red with pink edges

Nose - Medicinal and complex berry on the nose

Taste - Big mouthfeel, complex and bright botanicals from the gin compliment the tart, fruity sweet berry.

Finish - Long herbal notes with the sloe berry rounding it all out

Best Enjoyed - Sloe Gin Fizz

BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #154 - Okanagan Spirits BRBN

DISTILLERY NOTES

Harvested from Coldstream valley grain corn, through diligent milling, fermenting, distilling and aging we introduce BC’s first Bourbon-style Corn Whisky, BRBN.

The grain corn is grown just west of our Vernon Flagship distillery, and is milled onsite before being fermented and distilled in our state-of-the-art copper pot flavour stills.

After a carefully monitored distillation process, our BRBN whisky is put down to rest and mature in carefully selected white American toasted oak casks. These heavily toasted honeycomb barrels release a flavour of burnt caramel to finesse the sweet flavour.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

In celebration of Whisky Sour Day, I decided to taste upstairs in Vista 18, the house bourbon style whisky from Okanagan Spirits. Rich and bold with great barrel complexity, not as sweet as American styles but would make a sour sing.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Copper burnt orange

Nose - Hints of oaky vanilla, complex grain mill and off sweet corn

Taste - Much drier than it’s American counterparts, hints of stonefruit, vanilla, oak and hints of spicy barley balance out the corn bomb

Finish - Deep and complex corn notes with hints of vanilla and oak

Best Enjoyed - Neat or in this case, a whisky sour

BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #152 - Wayward Distillery Garstin's Plunder

DISTILLERY NOTES

Like all our spirits, Garstin's Plunder is crafted from 100% raw and unpasteurized BC honey.

We start by fermenting our honey into honey wine (Mead) before carefully distilling it on custom stills into our award winning Unruly Vodka. Garstin’s Plunder is a marriage of our Unruly Vodka and the amazing garlic grown by Mr Garstin!

For almost 25 years, Brent Garstin has been growing and saving his own garlic right here in the Comox Valley. Affectionately named after Brent's pet cat Plunder, Garstin’s Plunder has adapted over generations to our local soils and climate.

”This time of year is one that I look forward to all summer - our local farmers have been working hard all season and are able to share their abundant harvest of delicious, local flavors. Brent Garstin is definitely an expert at growing garlic! This year Brent shared a few types of his garlic with us, fresh and juicy straight out of the ground when it came time to harvest, and he even came into the Distillery to help us prepare the nearly 40 pounds of garlic and chat about his experience growing it, which felt really special!

Something that I've learned from working with Brent is that not all garlic is interchangeable. Each variety has its own personality and appeal. The recipe that we chose after experimenting with each variety individually was made with consideration to the smell, and flavour that was brought out from each by our honey spirit.

Garstin's Plunder has a strong raw garlic nose that makes me instantly hungry. The initial flavour is softened by the honey character that is distinctive to our vodka, so the garlic isn't overpowering. The finish is deep, lingering, and satisfying for THIS garlic lover. I'm excited for all of the garlicky Caesars that I'll be enjoying in my near future!”

-Laura Carbonell: Head Distiller

BC SPIRITS NOTES

So excited for this one today! First time tasting it and boy was I not disappointed. Amazing breadth of flavor from this garlic vodka from Wayward Distillery. Soft almost aged sweet garlic through to classic flavor and then finishing with an aromatic spiciness. Must get this limited run ASAP!

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Clear with a hint of off white

Nose - Bold, brilliant and huge garlic

Taste - The compliment of the very clean vodka balances off the complex garlic, from sweet to classic all the way through to aromatic spicy. This is garlic vodka that gives much more!

Finish - Long and lingering (obviously) garlic

BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #151 - Dubh Glas Distillery Sage Advice

Dubh Glas Sage Advice

DISTILLERY NOTES

Our wildflower honey is collected by a local beekeeper in small batches. The bees collect nectar from the many flowers in the region, such as the bright yellow flowers of the Arrowleaf Balsamroot. The decision to use sage, the key herb in the recipe, was inspired by the aromatic wild sage which grows abundantly on the local hills thanks to the sunny dry climate of the Southern Okanagan. The spirits are then infused for 90 days with the honey, sage and a secret mix of herbs and spices.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Love this little sneaky one from Dubh Glas, their whisky liqueur. Gorgeous spice, aromatic sage, complex honeycomb and bright citrus; at 35%, its not over cloying and finishes complex and clean.

Alcohol - 35% / 70 proof

Color - Light golden wheat

Nose - Classic Dubh Glas whisky backbone, hand rubbed sage and honeycomb

Taste - Rubbed sage, Christmas spice and honeycomb with a rich whisky backbone

Finish - The alcohol and spice drys out the honey sweetness, long herbal spice finish

Best Enjoyed - On the rocks or in a Rusty Nail with the elusive Dubh Glas single malt

BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #149/150 - Ampersand Gin and Anderson Distilling Smoked Rosemary Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES - Ampersand Gin

Ampersand Gin is our flagship product, an award winning instant classic, that brings together BC grown wheat with eight cultivated or wild harvested botanicals and our own spring water.

Ampersand Gin plays well with others in your favourite cocktails, but it's also brilliant on its own. And since it's made from scratch with high quality botanicals and BC grown wheat, we think it's a better gin. Period.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I missed day #149 so I doubled down today, upstairs at Vista 18 which has an amazing selection of local spirits. Because I hosted Jess from Ampersand Distilling on the podcast yesterday, I want to do their gin and then something brand new for me, the Anderson Distilling Smoked Rosemary Gin. Both so different, the Ampersand is a classicist gin with a great citrusy profile while the Anderson Smoked Rosemary is complex and rosemary forward.

Our liqueur has a rich, sweet, floral taste with tropical and citrus notes that are delicious on ice with a squeeze of lemon or mixed in a refreshing cocktail perfect for patio sipping.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Something I have never tasted from Odd Society which doesn’t happen often. Their elderflower is floral and aromatic with rich elderflower pop and hints of melon. Not overly sweet so watch your balances in cocktails, I’d grab a bottle of bubbles and do a gorgeous spritz.

Shelter Point Smoke Point #1

Shelter+Point+Distillery.jpg

DISTILLERY NOTES

Introducing Shelter Point’s first ever peat influenced whisky. This single grain smoky delight has been aged in American oak ex-bourbon casks for 5 years and finished in casks previously used by a famous Islay distillery for 8 months.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I don’t partake in smoky whiskies much but this one is something special. The Shelter Point Smoke Point is a delicious single malt combining their classic single malt with an Islay whisky finish. Amazing how much flavor comes from finishing, beautiful campfire smoke and flinty stone; reminds me of being on the river and having a late night fire.

Alcohol - 55% / 110 proof

Color - Deep gold to light wheat on the edges

Nose - Light vanilla and gentle barley notes with a hint of the smoke to come

Taste - The Islay smoke hits you straight away, bold and mouth feeling but the Shelter Point whisky holds up and comes through and balances the smoke.

Finish - Complex smoke tones but as that subsides, classic Shelter Point

Best Enjoyed - Neat

Shelter Point Montfort 151

DISTILLERY NOTES

Montfort 151 is a truly unique field-to flask whisky. The name itself is the very lot in which the single-grain barley was grown, as well the coordinates to the exact field are included on every bottle. The Montfort series has literal grass root beginnings, each field that we farm has a distinctive district lot number, as well as site specific soil classification, and a proximity to the ocean and forested land. These collective characteristics grow barley in distinctive and unique ways resulting in unique flavor profiles from these micro regions on our farm. Montfort 151 is distinctively different than the Montfort DL 141, and Montfort 151 is a proud product of our distillery home.

BC SPIRITS NOTES
