BC SPIRITS NOTES

Can't believe I haven't had this on the show before! The Devine Distillery Glen Saanich #5 is their more classic style single malt whisky and this batch does not disappoint, bright and fresh on the nose, pear, Xmas spice and hints of vanilla; on the palate the pear and citrus is evident with bright freshness leading to complex spice notes and hints of maltiness and oak in the finish.

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #301 - Wiseacre Farms R&D #13 Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

Years from now, when we all look back in history at 2020, it will be remembered for some rather extraordinary challenges. We feel like it should also be remembered for the introduction of a damn delicious Gin – which carried us through some pretty crazy times.

With each small batch distilled, bottled and labeled by hand, this R&D Gin Series is craft spirit production at its best. Each blend has been meticulously crafted, balancing traditional juniper top notes with the complex addition of citrus and spice for character and depth. Enjoy this collection of micro-batch Gins, each one a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes, alchemistic magic of the Wiseacre lab.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

First time trying anything from Wiseacre Farm Distillery and I was blown away. Goregous fruity sweet and aromatic, unique juniper character for a BC gin and loads and loads of flavor on the palate. Candied citrus, rich fruity notes and long and lingering botanicals, absolutely love it.

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #300 - Sons of Vancouver Cigarettes on a Leather Jacket

DISTILLERY NOTES

This is a 90% Rye, 5% Wheat, and 5% Barley whisky aged in used Westland Peated Malt Whisky Barrel. The Rye was our first barrel we ever put away and was fermented with rum yeast. We wanted fruity notes to lend themselves to the rye spice. The rye was aged for 5 years, to balance this release we blended it with the 3 year old wheat and barley malt to drive it home.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Well never in my wildest dreams did I think I would make it to this milestone of 300 Spirit a Days but here we are. I have been so fortunate to taste so many amazing spirits from across this amazing province. I want to thank everyone for the support over the last 2 years and can't wait to keep pushing the envelope of local spirit knowledge. The Sons of Vancouver brand new, not yet released whisky is nothing short of one of the best whiskies in BC. Rich rye is balanced with hints of soft smoke, a tropical fruitiness and a big burst of complex oak and vanilla bean. This is a must have when it becomes available.

Alcohol - 56.7% / 113.4 proof

Color - Deep copper and burnt orange

Nose - Super fruity esters on the nose, tropical fruit, vanilla with a hint of rye spice

Taste - Fruity notes are balanced with the classic rye spice, hints of whispy smoke and bold vanilla in the back of the palate

The team at Moon Spirits really just wanted to double down for their first release and dropped a cask strength single malt into the mix as well. I think that I like this one more than the regular but that's more of my style. deep dry chocolates and cacao on the nose, hints of the regular sweet stonefruit. BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #297 - Wood's Spirit Co. Cascadian Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

This evolution of a classic dry gin is high on northwest character. Juniper-forward and enhanced with hops, it’s distilled under a vacuum at mild temperatures to bring out more vibrant, lush flavours. Enjoy with our Amaro or in you choice of gin cocktail!

Lovely evergreen notes of juniper mingled with fir on the nose. There are full, round tastes of evergreen with grapefruit, and black pepper. Nice balance with the juniper flavours. The finish is of geraniums, warm spices, and citrus. It's a long and complex finish, with just the right amount of bitterness.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

From a guest on YouTube asking about this and I was shocked that I hadn't tasted the Wood's Spirit Co. Cascadian Gin before. So I picked up a bottle and here we are. I love everything Wood's does because of the vacuum distillation method, it creates a wide and broad taste profile due to the way it's made. Bright and complex West Coast forest on the nose is backed on the palate with rich citrus, piney juniper, complex botanicals and long finish.

Alcohol - 47% / 94 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Sweet and aromatic pine on the nose, hints of vibrant citrus

The gin is then barrel aged in French oak that was previously home to Cowichan Valley red wine, giving it a distinct copper colour and subtle wood character to enhance the botanicals.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I can't believe that I haven't done this one on the show but always so happy that I am finding these amazing sneaky one. Being from Merridale means fruit based spirit which has amazing aroma and texture, pair this with locally foraged and harvested botanicals along with a little aged in toasted barrels and you have a complex and tasty gin that represents the Cowichan Valley.

A west coast inspired gin, distilled with copious amount of juniper , coriander, locally grown hops, lavender , rosemary and lemon verbena steeped in butterfly pea flower, making for a brilliantly blue gin that transforms colour with citrus or tonic.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Arbutus Distillery has been getting a lot of attention lately, but it seems I thought they had got all the attention over the last almost 300 episodes but in fact, they haven't gotten enough. It is their classic Empiric, tasted last week infused with Butterfly Peas Flower, the magic color that changes with acid. The beautiful complex and herbal notes of the Empiric have the addition to the musty floral notes from the flower. Gorgeous standalone style.

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #294 - One Foot Crow Gunpowder Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

100 Proof mineral infused. Made with black pepper as one of the botanicals. This Gin is spicy but without a bite. Works well on it’s own but makes an awesome Martini.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Something that is completely unique in BC is hard to find but the One Foot Crow Distillery Mantra of creating 50%/100 proof spirits that are infused with natural minerals is definitely up there. Their Gunpowder Gin is black and viscous with rich, flinty minerals, fresh rain on pavement and hints of the underlying botanicals on the nose, then the palate surprises you with floral notes, gentle piney juniper and complex minerality. Very unique and cool.

Alcohol - 50% / 100 proof

Color - Black

Nose - Big mineral punch, wet pavement, rich juniper playing in the background

Taste - The palate is tricky, floral notes start to come forward with aromatic juniper all the while the minerality and richness is very evident

DISTILLERY NOTES

Coniferous aged gin. A special version of our west coast Empiric Gin, rested on Grand Fir tips, pine, spruce & other botanicals.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I suppose you can say that I am rediscovering Arbutus Distillery over the last few weeks. The Forest Dweller combines and takes to another level the trend of flavored and oak aged gins to another level. Oak aged with a post infusion of spruce and pine tips gives this gin a unique sweet fruitiness that you don't come across often. Must try, love to do this in a gin and tonic and play with the bitters.

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #292 - Moon Shaft Liqueur

DISTILLERY NOTES

Clay has blended Moon Espresso Vodka, fresh pulled espresso from local Oughtred Coffee, sugar, almonds, cocoa nibs, and Mexican vanilla.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

A modern classic for Victoria (even if it was created in Alberta), the shaft is a mixture of vodka, coffee liqueur and espresso topped with cream liqueur. The Shaft from Moonshine Spirits is exactly what a bottled shaft should taste like, the bite of the base spirit, the perfected sweetened coffee liqueur and rich, roasted coffee. Pour two ounces of this over ice and drizzle cream liqueur and you are good to go.

Alcohol - 30% / 60 proof

Color - Dark coffee

Nose - Nicely roasted coffee notes, hints of vanilla and brown sugar sweetness

Taste - Perfectly balanced and tantalising blend of nicely roasted coffee, cacao, vanilla and brown sugar sweetness. This is ready to go

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #291 - Legend Distilling Doctor's Orders Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

Legend has it British Columbians did prohibition better than anyone else.  No, you couldn't buy alcohol, but your doctor could prescribe it for you.

Now, we're no Doctors - though our distillery is a former Doctor's office - but we'd like to think our handcrafted gin would have been scrawled across prescription pads throughout the Okanagan.  In fact, you might say it's just what the Doctor ordered.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Delightful surprise never doing this on the show, Legend Distilling encapsulates the Naramata Bench. The wheat grain based spirit is peppered with classic and foraged botanicals culminating in a textured and complex palate of aromatic spices and floral botanicals. It feels like you are driving through the bench on a warm summers day.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Fruity herbal notes, hints of piney juniper and summer on the Naramata bench

Taste - Bold fruity herbal notes flow through on the palate, the juniper is delightfully structured and leans into a mix of classic juniper and piney West Coast.

Finish - Gorgeous floral and aromatic herbal notes

Best Enjoyed - Pair this with raspberry in your G&T

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #290 - Sheringham Distillery Coffee Liqueur

DISTILLERY NOTES

Our coffee liqueur was born out of our love for all things java related as well as our neighbours in Sooke. When the team needs some caffeine to kick start their day, it’s off to the Stick in the Mud. Roasting their own coffee since 2010, their quality is second to none. During a morning visit, master distiller Jason MacIsaac walked out of The Stick with the idea to create locally sourced, semi-sweet coffee liqueur using only the best ingredients available.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Don't know how I missed this one in my collection but I did. Whenever I head to Sooke to visit Sheringham Distillery, I always grab a coffee from Stick in the Mud Roastery and this combines those two loves. Gorgeous coffee and vanilla notes, balanced with some bright acidity and perfect sweetness. Drink on the rocks or in a White Russian.

Alcohol - 21.5% / 43 proof

Color - Deep coffee brown

Nose - fresh roasted beans, hints of vanilla, heavy roasted notes

Taste - Off sweet, brown sugar, slightly heavy roasted coffee, vanilla and long round notes

Finish - Sweet coffee for days

Best Enjoyed - On the rocks or in a White Russian

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #289 - Arbutus Distillery Empiric Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

The Empiric Gin is centered around the merger of classic botanicals such as juniper and coriander along side west coast staples such as hops, rosemary lavender and the unique addition of lemon verbena imparting the gin's citrus tones. Especially floral yet well balanced.

Name and packaging are inspired from the historical 'Empiric Death Doctors’ noted to have worn beak-like masks stuffed with aromatic botanicals and said to have used various Juniper based tinctures to ward off such ailments as the plague. Their practices are thought to be one of the early origin myths of Gin itself.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I think this is very underrated product from Arbutus Distillery, their amazing liqueurs get tons of attention but their classic gin is amazing. Beautifully fragrant, aromatic spring herbal garden, bright verbeana, rich juniper and high notes of pine. Going to be playing with this in the future much more.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Bright herbal notes with floral undertones and hints of spice

Taste - Deep spice notes balanced with spring herb garden notes, floral and aromatic with hints of coastal forest.

Finish - Long spring herb garden

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #287 - Old Order Legacy Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

Our craft gin is made in a Dutch style of Genever, distilled from a 100% malted barley grain mash, which produces a fuller-bodied spirit. Our approach to Legacy Gin was to make the sweet spicy flavours of our malted barley spirit shine with botanicals that include juniper berry as well as cardamom, coriander, anise, angelica root and cinnamon. You’ll find no flowery lavender here folks! This is balanced with a citrus profile of orange and lemon peel and dried apples from our farm in Summerland. This unique complex gin, stands on its own in a Martini with just a splash of Vermouth or pairs well with a craft tonic

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Haven’t tried much from Old Order Distilling but glad I stumbled upon a bottle of this at Tudor Liquor Store. Grapefruit and piney juniper on the nose leans into big textural floral notes on the palate. Another great addition to your gin collection.

Alcohol - 43% / 86 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Grapefruit and piney juniper on the nose, aromatic floral notes

Taste - Big aromatic floral bomb on the palate, fresh and clean with balanced piney juniper and rich citrus

Finish - Long citrus and floral notes

Best Enjoyed - Gin & tonic for sure

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #286 - Taynton Bay Pickled Vodka

DISTILLERY NOTES

Perfect for Caesars! This tangy and lively spirit was born through a partnership with Sophie's Original Choice Pickled Products. Trust us, it's amazing! Your Caesars have never been better with this Pickled Vodka.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Another great find, while I am not a huge fan of flavored vodka, this is a fun little number from Taynton Bay. It's not just a pickled flavored vodka but a pickle vodka; on the nose, bread and butter pickles then the palate opens up to rich salinity and texture with dill, pickling spice notes and that distinct cucumber acidity.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Pickle green

Nose - Bread and butter pickles on the nose, pickling spice and deep notes

Taste - Rich, pickling spice, bread and butter pickles and huge salinity to it. Layers of deep flavors

Finish - Bread and butter pickles for days

Best Enjoyed - Caesars for sure
