BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #171 - Okanagan Spirits Bartlett Pear

DISTILLERY NOTES

Picked from Kelowna, BC, orchards our pears are fermented at precisely the height of their aromatic development, they are then distilled to create a fine and delicate pear brandy.

Our traditional European-style Poire Williams is an optimum presentation of elegance and gentleness, which is typical for this fine pear.

It takes over two dozen Okanagan Bartlett pears to make just one bottle of this fabulous Poire Williams.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

This brandy is a testament to why I absolutely love the category. The Okanagan Spirits Bartlett Pear Brandy is nothing short of spectacular; fresh pear with the balance of slightly tannic skin and fresh pear flesh, absolutely gorgeous.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 Proof

Color - Light straw gold

Nose - Fresh pear, tannic skin and juicy flesh

Taste - This is incredible flavorful bright and fresh pear, doesn’t feel like there is any alcohol at all. Like biting into a fresh pear

Finish - Aromatic pear throughout the long and lingering finish

BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #169 - Merridale Distillery Cider Brandy

DISTILLERY NOTES

With the 2007 apple harvest, we fermented special batches of cider specifically for distilling. Our first batch of Cowichan Cider brandy is made from six different blends of cider apples which we then placed in French Oak Barrels of two different sizes, 100 litre and 225 litre. When tasting the brandy, it is best served in a ‘snifter’ at room temperature. Swirl it in the glass and enjoy the aroma.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Another incredible fruit brandy with some terrific age to it, I honestly don't know of any fruit brandies in BC or across the country that have this much age to them. 7 year old cider brandy blends the brightness and acidity of the apple with nice warming spice, I was expecting more reductive apple pie notes but this still stands up nicely. Must get for the apple brandy lover.

Alcohol - 42% / 84 Proof

Color - Light copper

Nose - Fresh tannic apple skin and flesh, hints of spiced vanilla oak when left in the glass

Taste - Bright and complex apple notes that is complimented with balanced oak, vanilla and Christmas spice

Finish - Long fresh apple notes, hints of oak

Best Enjoyed - Neat

BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #168 - Elder Bros. Farms Elderberry Schnapps

Elder Bros farms Elderberry

BC SPIRITS NOTES

A ridiculously unique product from Elder Bros Farms, Elderberry is not a flavor most people have experience with. A mixture of bing cherries, mascarpone and deep stewed berries; this is a perfect pairing with bourbon and would make a great bourbon sour variation.

Color - Deep red

Nose - Medicinal, herbal black berry

Taste - Unique, an amalgamation of all black berries including cherry, herbal almost subtle amaro tones with hints of green leaf and floral notes

Finish - Clean and dry but full of herbal notes, black berries and hint of floral notes

Best Enjoyed - Chilled and sipped after dinner

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I think this is a cult gin in BC, really good example of New Western Gin from The Dubh Glas Distillery. Huge aromatic citrus, pomelo peel and flesh, hints of lavender and piney juniper. On the palate, it explodes with oily floral notes, that fragrant citrus and hints of juniper.

BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #166 - Stillhead Distillery Barrel Aged Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

Our signature international platinum award winning London Dry Gin has been barrel aged for one year in a bourbon barrel. The aging process has changed the flavour profile giving it mulled notes of holiday spices. The oak barrel has brought out the nostalgic tastes of cloves, star anise, cinnamon, and added a hint of vanilla.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

This barrel aged gin from Stillhead Distillery is the epitome of what I talk about when it comes to barrel aged gins, do they add to the flavor of the gin or compliment it. This one has subtle fresh oak and spicy vanilla notes that I think works beautifully with the botanicals and alcohol content. Really complex gin

Alcohol - 43% / 86 proof

Color - Very light golden yellow

Nose - Subtle christmas spice with hints of oak vanillin

Taste - Sweet juniper with balanced vanilla on the front with cloves, star anise and cinnamon in the back

Finish - Balanced citrusy juniper with clean, not overly pronounced oak

Best Enjoyed - Gin & Tonic with Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic

Influenced by the flavours of the Mediterranean, this isn’t your typical Gin. We blended Rosemary & Olives with traditional botanicals to create a savory, artisanal spirit that is as versatile as it is unique.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

First time tasting this from Deep Cove Craft and I think this gin should be way more well known than I feel that it is. Rosemary smacks you in the face as soon as you pour, with it playing well with the juniper; olive leaf and brine make the palate huge and round. Takes you straight to the Mediterranean by the seaside eating antipasti.

Okanagan Spirits Rhubarb Liqueur

Rhubarb-Liqueur-Web.png

DISTILLERY NOTES

After putting the call out to local residents, the interest in supplying Okanagan Spirits with rhubarb was amazing and encouraging. Many rhubarb growers often added their own tales of life experiences with rhubarb and various old family rhubarb recipes. Others, admittedly were just happy to get rid of the rhubarb and see it put to good use.

Hand chopping of every stalk at the distillery was humbling; actually mind-numbing. Maybe not so much a labour of love now. The resulting liqueur? A beautiful natural pink-red 24% Rhubarb Liqueur that oozes a lingering Rhubarb aftertaste.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

It's spring time regardless of the lock down, the Okanagan Spirits rhubarb liqueur just kicks you in the mouth with gorgeous sweet, fresh rhubarb. Deep fruit, but not stewy, bright acidity and a clean fruity finish.

Alcohol - 24% / 48 proof

Color - Light watermelon pink

Nose - Fresh uncut rhubarb, in the garden, leaf and all

Taste - Gorgeous slightly cooked rhubarb but with fresh, bright acidity. Not overly stewy or sweet

Finish - Fresh rhubarb with amazing acidity

Best Enjoyed - In a spritz
