BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #341 - Odd Society East Van Vodka

DISTILLERY NOTES

For the makers and doers, the dreamers and inventors. For the artists and artisans, the hardworking and the inspired. This spirit is for the odd ones. It’s for the proud and the quirky, the charming and misunderstood.

Made from 100% malted barley grown in Prince George and malted in Armstrong, East Van Vodka is distilled in our small-batch, European-made, copper pot stills before being lightly filtered and proudly blended with purified Vancouver water.

Unlike most vodkas, East Van Vodka is not a completely neutral spirit. It is lightly fragrant, sweet-smelling and incredibly smooth. Sip it straight if you want to. Consider it a single malt vodka.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

An absolute classic from Odd Society Spirits and one I can't believe I haven't tried this one on the show. The definition of craft vodka for BC, the East Van is full flavored with sweet and complex grain profile, hints of funk on the nose flowing through to fresh rain, funky grain and hints of soft apple and pear fruitiness.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Fruity grain, wet concrete, funky wet grass notes

Taste - Mouth filling and textural, rich creaminess, funky sweet grains and just a bite of apple and pear in the finish

Finish - Wet concrete and funky sweet grain

Best Enjoyed - Great craft vodka to try

Fresh from the still, this gin was passed through an extractor packed full of fresh Fraser Valley strawberries adding aromatic fruitiness to the peppery botanicals. Cocktail friendly, try this gin in our Strawberry Basil collins, available inhouse or in a cocktail kit to go.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

This is a teeter totter of a gin from Spinnaker's Brewpub, balancing those beautiful high notes of the Breakwater Gin with luscious strawberry notes. What about the first cocktail we all fell in love with? Jello Shooters.
This artisanal Peach Schnapps will take you wayyy back.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

This year's April Fools Day release from the crazy minds of Sons of Vancouver. Their peach schnapps do not dissapoint, a blend of traditional, funky 80's and 90's styling all wrapped up in an amazing flavor profile. On the nose, dry peaches, leaning into the traditional eau de vie style but on the palate, the fruity sweetness explodes with candied and fresh peach flavors. Really fun release from the lads.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Light peach

Nose - Classic peach eau de vie style, dry, aromatic and peachy

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #338 - Moon under Water Loganberry Liqueur

BC SPIRITS NOTES

A little liquor store archaeology led me to find this at Tudor House Liquor Store. I love loganberries and the The Moon Under Water Brewery, Pub, Distillery & Tasting Room really let's the berry sing. Kind of a cross between a blackcurrant and blackberry, the liqueur isn't overly sweet, more of a slightly alcoholised loganberry juice, this would be a great drizzle on a local Bramble cocktail.

Alcohol - 20% / 40 proof

Color - Translucent purple

Nose - Gorgeous loganberry on the nose, a combination of blackcurrant and blackberry.

Taste - Really tastes likely a lightly alcoholised loganberry juice. Not alcohol presence, just sweet and fruity loganberries

Finish - Loganberries for days, no cloying sweetness

Best Enjoyed - As above, drizzle in a local Bramble cocktail

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #336 - Averill Creek Vermouth

DISTILLERY NOTES

On his arrival in 2018, our winemaker inherited five barrels of six-year solera aged fortified wine. By steeping it with a blend of old-growth cedar, Island tea leaves and a variety of botanicals, the result is an apéritif indicative of the Pacific Northwest.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Vancouver Island is becoming the mecca for vermouth production in BC and this addition from Averill Creek is a great example of what we can do here. Based on the very unique solera dessert wine and clocking in at a whopping 19% ABV, this is dry herbaceuousness on the nose with hints of the complexity of the wine base but without overly sweet taste. The palate is complex, dry and has poignant botanicals; an amazing release for the first time.

Alcohol - 19% / 38 proof

Color - Deep claret red

Nose - Dry barn, old wood, fresh hay, hints of spring herb garden

Taste - The dessert wine gives it so much depth and complexity, the perfect building blocks for the PNW botanicals, complex, thoughtfully chosen and balanced perfect with the rich, leathery wine base.

Finish - Balanced richness of the wine with dry complex herbal notes

Best Enjoyed - In a big local Manhattan with local rye whiskey

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #335 - Spinnaker's Chocolate Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

A velvety smooth infusion of our Botanical Beach Gin and cacao husks from Victoria’s Sirene Chocolate, resulting in a rich dark chocolate aroma with a bright juniper and citrus finish. Try it in an 21st Century or in a G&T with an orange garnish.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

What an incredibly unique and creative release from Spinnaker's Brewpub. I have never in my entire career tasted a chocolate gin, I have never thought of making one before but this is fun and surprising. On the nose, you get that classic bright, high notes of the Breakwater Gin with just hints of chocolate then it follows on the palate with wide chocolatey profile. Definitely do this in a 20th Century.

Alcohol - 43% / 86 proof

Color - Light cocoa butter brown

Nose - Bright, high notes of the Botanical Beach Gin with light hints of cocoa husks

Taste - The gin pops on the palate with bright juniper and citrus and then leans into the broad chocolate tones that the cocoa husks bring

Finish - Balanced gin and chocolate notes, neither takes from the other.

Best Enjoyed - 20th Century Cocktail all the way

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #334 - Odd Society Spirits Barrel Aged Mia Amata

DISTILLERY NOTES

Distiller Gordon Glanz produced this Italian digestif with his daughter Mia Glanz, who studied ethnobotany at the University of British Columbia. Along with being a nod to her name, Mia Amata translates to “my beloved” in Italian. Mia Amata unites expressive fruits, flowers, barks, roots and resins from the four corners of the world. At its heart are indigenous aphrodisiacs from Brazil blended with myrrh gum from Somalia, kola nut from West Africa, candied plum from Persia, cacao and vanilla bean from Mexico, mace from India, and elderflower and magnolia from British Columbia. Bitter on first approach, this complex elixir reveals flavours of dark chocolate, orange, plum, nut and mint in a sweet finish.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

This is a distillery only exclusive from Odd Society so you got to head down and pick up a bottle. The barrel aging calms down the Mia Amata dramatically while adding some beaituful oaky spiced vanilla notes to the mix. Lovwely honey suckle and comb on the nose that sit on the palate balancing out the complex and dry botanicals.

Alcohol - 30% / 60 proof

Color - Deep coffee brown

Nose - Complex dry roots, deep floral notes and rich honey comb

Taste - Mouthfeeling chocolate and vanilla leads to dry herbal notes of cola and menthol and then finishes with spicy oaked vanilla notes

Finish - Finish lingers long after the sip, complex herbal tones are balanced by vanilla and cacao.

Best Enjoyed - Odd Society Negroni - Wallflower, Bittersweet Vermouth and this; equal parts

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #333 - Bruinwood Distillery Mocha Cream

DISTILLERY NOTES

Coffee, chocolate, hazelnut, cream and the slightest hint of sweetness. Need we say more? Nope.

Made from British Columbian wheat, malted barley, honey, eggs, cream, coffee, chocolate, hazelnuts and sugar.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Cream liqueurs have always been an Achilles heel for me and this one really takes it home. Mocha cream from Bruinwood Distillery is nothing short of epic. Obviously creamy, balanced coffee and chocolate and long, not overly sweet finish. Drizzle this over your ice cream and you will be set.

Alcohol - 25% / 50 proof

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #332 - Stillhead Distillery Blueberry Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

A seasonal flacvoured gin! Using the same gin botanicals as our award winning Wild Blackberry Gin, combined with blueberries from Sweet Pickins Farm in the Cowichan valley, we’ve created a fun, seasonal flavoured gin to kick off spring

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Another fantastic release from Stillhead Distillery, a perfect summer sipper. The same base as the Wild Blackberry Gin with the infusion of local blueberries from Duncan. On the nose, that spicy ginger and citrus bite with balanced bright juniper is then complimented perfectly with the blueberry sweetness. At 40%, be careful not to just pour this on the rocks and drink neat, deadly.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Light blueberry

Nose - Bright juniper, ginger and citrus on the nose with hints of the berry

Taste - Gin first with the blueberry creeping in and balancing out the complexity of the gin. Very approachable and deadly easy drinking

Finish - Blueberry for days backed by tasty gin

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #331 - Bruinwood Distillery Haskap Liqueur

DISTILLERY NOTES

Haskap is an ancient Japanese name meaning 'berry of long life and good vision'. Our richest, reddest drink ever! It has a sweet tangy flavour that suggests a blend of blueberry, raspberry and blackcurrant.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I love haskap liqueur and to have another one on the market, I truly believe this should be subbed for cassis in a local craft way. Bruinwood Distillery is perfect, rich and that complex mix of blackcurrant, blackberry and black raspberry all balanced nicely without a huge cloying sugar bomb. Letting the fruit speak itself

Alcohol - 25% / 50 proof

Color - Deep dark purple

Nose - Fruit forward, rich haskap which translate to black raspberry, black currant and blueberry

Taste - Balanced sweetness with rich fruitiness, the alcohol is distant in the background and really let’s the berry sing solo.

Finish - Not cloying, rich berry lingers

Best Enjoyed - Sub for cassis in a Kir Royale

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #330 - Misguided Spirits Spectral Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

A flavourful vapour-infused gin made with eight botanicals. Slightly juniper forward, with bright notes of coriander, Spectral gin elicits the sweetness of citrus touched by the warmth of cinnamon, cubeb berries and grains of paradise

BC SPIRITS NOTES

What a treat, the Misguided Spirits Spectral Gin is a vapour infused gin meaning that the alcohol vapors flows through a botanical filled gin basket, very similar to Bomaby Sapphire. This allows for very bright juniper, citrus and botanical flavors; it is complex and approachable, perfect for the big brand drinkers out there.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Complex botanicals, classic bright juniper with aromatic cubeb berries and grains of paradise

Taste - Fantastically approachable, bright citrus, complex botanicals and aromatic juniper. This is just a solid gin.

DISTILLERY NOTES

Based on early Scandinavian recipes, our akvavit (from the Latin aqua vitae or water of life) is clearly herbaceous with caraway, anise, dill and citrus. It is often promoted as an after-dinner digestive. Serve simply over ice or with a splash of water.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

You know how I love my akvavit and this is a great addition to the collection from Bruinwood Distillery. Big savory tones of caraway, dill and fennel with the citrus and coriander hanging out in the back. This would be a great hearty Scandinavian dish pairing in winter by the fire. Very tasty.

DISTILLERY NOTES

Craft vodka carefully handmade using B.C. grain and Vancouver Island-malted barley from Phillips. Good enough to sip, and makes great cocktails.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

While vodka isn't my favorite category, I am enjoying tasting some of the newcraft vodkas on the market. Misguided Spirits has made a amazing flavorful yet approachable vodka, gone are the days of craft vodkas tasting more like white dog than a vodka and we welcome the days of sweet wheat, hints of funky barley and notes of fresh rain on hot concrete. BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #326 - Mainland Whisky Time Machine

DISTILLERY NOTES

Aged in an electric box, wired with time-altering devices (heat, pressure, and recoopered dismantled wine barrels.)

This whisky is aged in 1/1000th of the time and is 44%abv. On the nose, butterscotch, brown sugar, worn leather. On the palate, caramel, roasted marshmallow, grapefruit, tobacco and a long vanilla forward finish

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I am loving Mainland Whisky this week and the Time Machine is something I was dubious and skeptical on due to my experience with "fast aged" whiskies. But boy, did they do a killer job; gorgeous on the nose, tobacco and leather on the nose with hints of reductive corn whisky on the palate, raisins, cigar and leather continue on palate for a shockingly good dram.

Alcohol - 44% / 88 proof

Color - Deep leather brown

Nose - Butterscotch, leather, reductive hints of hot summer road

Taste - Worn leather, tobacco and cigar, hints of dry caramel and butterscotch and long vanilla bean

Finish - Vanilla, leather and cigar with hints of butterscotch sweetness
