BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #271 - Queensborough Wine Barrel Aged Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

Notes of classic Queensborough Gin botanicals meld with the unique flavours of VQA Niagara Sauvignon Blanc wine barrels. 6 months of barrel aging imparts tropical fruit character with subtle oak and vanilla characteristics, adding complexity and depth to the Double Gold medal winning Queensborough Gin. Enjoy on its own or as a brown spirit alternative in your favourite cocktail.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Very unique barrel aged gin from Queensborough and Central City, one that is aged for 6 months in Niagara Sauvignon Blanc barrels. The Queensbourogh is very classical in profile but the introduction of that barrel resting makes it explode with tropical fruit like kiwi and passionfruit with hints of spicy vanilla oak just ties this together.

Alcohol - 43% / 86 proof

Color - Light golden wheat

Nose - Very classic Queensborough gin with bright citrus notes, hints of tropical fruit and aromatic juniper

Taste - Starts like the regular gin and then you get hit with the tropical notes, slightly spicy vanilla oak but those tropical notes really blow up

Finish - Spiced vanilla oak and tropical fruit just linger forever

Best Enjoyed - With Fever-tree Mediterranean Tonic

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #270 - Resurrection Spirits White Rye

DISTILLERY NOTES

Our White Rye is twice-distilled from 100% non-GMO BC rye grain. The second distillation achieves a texture and viscosity expected from a high quality spirit while retaining the complexities and flavours of rye grain.

This technique creates a bold but versatile spirit that can be enjoyed straight up or mixed into your favourite cocktail.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

This lovely number from Resurrection Spirits sits somewhere between a white whisky and a vodka and I couldn't be happier. Knowing the way they make their whisky that I tasted last week, it's spicy, fruity and complex on the nose and palate. Should be anyone's collection.

Alcohol - 45% / 90 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Sweet rye notes, underlying spice

Taste - That rye spice is just beautiful on the palate, complex and eye opening. Hints of rainwater and sweet rye bread

Finish - Long and lingering spice

Best Enjoyed - Play around with a martini for sure

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #269 - Long Table Distillery Akvavit

DISTILLERY NOTES

This premium Akvavit is copper pot distilled using a traditional Scandinavian recipe. This licorice forward spirit gets it’s character from six hand picked botanicals which include caraway, fennel, anise and Seville orange. The nose is greeted by complex licorice and orange notes but on the pallet a smooth, sweet nish of lingering marmalade and prevailing herbal notes. Served from the freezer its thicker viscosity makes Långbord Akvavit an ideal aperitif and digestif, served around a meal, and as a base for creative craft cocktails.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Really blown away with not having a bottle of this in my selection, Long Table Distillery Akvavit is one of the OG of the category in BC. Big anise bomb with complex and different styles of anise throughout, from earthy caraway to sweet fennel and everything in between. Serve chilled neat after dinner.

Alcohol - 42% / 84 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Sweet fennel and bright seville oranges

Taste - Complex anise notes, a wide array from earthy caraway to sweet fennel with that bright orange finishing

Finish - Earthy anise and bright orange lingering

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #268 - Bohemian Spirits Cherry Apple Liqueur

DISTILLERY NOTES

Local fruits saved from the frost. Sweet fire smolders in the chest; a warm moment to cherish and reflect. You're in good company.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

All the way from Kimberly in the mountains comes Bohemian Spirits, I have done a few things from them when I can find it. This Cherry Apple Liqueur is another eccentric, awesome release. Rich cherry juice with tannic apple balancing the sweetness; tastes like a liquid cherry pie. Would be great with rye, nocino shaken with lemon.

Alcohol - 20% / 40 proof

Color - Red signet red

Nose - Cooked cherries, apple skin, like cherry pie on the nose

Taste - Cherry juice, not sweet but textural and balanced with the tannic drying element of the apple, like liquid apple pie

Finish - Complex cherry til the end

Best Enjoyed - Play around in cocktails

DISTILLERY NOTES

Made using only 100% BC cherries, we carefully distill this un-oaked cherry eau-de-vie using our German column still to create a delicate spirit with strong aroma of cherries and marzipan. Makes any baking or fruit dish pop, and great in cocktails!

BC SPIRITS NOTES

It's a week of new things and I was sure I had this one in my collection. One of the island's cult followed spirits, the Kirsch is a testament to the love for brandy that Stillhead Distilling has. Rich and complex cherry from slightly stewed to fresh off the tree brightness. Great one for your desserts or post dinner.

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #266 - Yaletown Distilling Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

Yaletown artisan gin is an aromatic London dry style. Our 8 botanicals range from Italian juniper berries, grains of paradise from West Africa, licorice root offering a gentle sweetness and bitter orange peel to round out the finish.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Another "I can't believe I haven't got this" moment with the Yaletown Distilling Gin. On the nose, it's a big and brooding London Dry style, with huge old world juniper on the nose but then the palate is a delicate taste. The juniper is still rightly there but then it is matched with soft botanicals and a floral mouthfeel. This is a perfect blend of Old World charm and PNW style.

Alcohol - 42% / 84 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Strong earthy juniper, pomelo peel and hints of licorice

Taste - Big juniper notes on the nose caught me off guard on the palate, subtle, finessed and floral.

Finish - Big bold juniper, earthy botanicals and hints of the floral notes

Best Enjoyed - with Fevertree Mediterranean Tonic

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #265 - Liberty Distilling Endeavour Origins Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

Produced once per year during harvest, Endeavour Origins Gin is Liberty’s version of a West Coast Traditional Dry Style Gin. The foundation is 100% Organic BC triple-distilled wheat spirit. Using a botanical gin basket, a blend of (25) BC botanicals are then slowly infused during distillation in our single copper pot still. The result is a gin with a polished, long-lasting, and smooth finish; perfect for sipping or creating your own traditional gin cocktail.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

This week is all about tasting things that I haven't had on the show or been a while between tasting and here we go for the The Liberty Distillery Endeavour Origins Gin. Made with botanicals from the province, this is a taste of the terroir. Rich and complex, allowing the other botanicals to sing as much as the juniper. This is a truly unique gin that showcases the aromatic wheat spirit base and all the spectrum of herbs and spices in the mix. A great representation of terroir in gin.

Alcohol - 45% / 90 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Like a West Coast forest in autumn, cut wood, earthy tones and piney juniper

Taste - Great texture, the wheat spirit is a great base that assembles the complex botanicals, hints of citrus and pine solidify this as a BC gin and an exploration into terroir

Finish - Higher proof gives a beautiful texture and allows the aromatic botanicals linger on your tongue

Best Enjoyed - Classic gin martini

DISTILLERY NOTES

Crafted from island-grown white wine grapes and fortified by our house-distilled honey spirit. A classic James Bond martini ingredient. Light and easy to drink on its own or pair with tonic or soda, and in martinis or cocktails. Our French-style white vermouth is elegant and bright with luscious apricot, spicy cinnamon, and floral layers of jasmine and chamomile.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Surprised that I haven’t had this on the show, Devine Distillery Bianca. Gorgeous vermouth in the Bianco style. Rich wine back bone with drying and complex botanicals make this a gorgeous vermouth able to stand up to some bold base spirits. Sweet aromatic wine with fragrant Christmas spice, would be great with navy strength gin

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

This juicy, fruity, limited release summer Spirit is great served on ice, with soda, or tonic. Enjoy and be thirsty...

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Never tasted anything from Tumbleweed Spirits before, this is a great starting point. Their base moonshine is flavorful and grain forward and doesn’t get taken over or take over the beautiful fruitiness of the blueberries. Would be great in a collins style drink with lemon and soda.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Deep blueberry skin

Nose - Hints of tannic blueberries with a definite and unique grain profile from the base spirit

Taste - Balanced with the flavors of the fresh blueberries and the moonshine perfectly. First is the bright and fruity blueberries and then comes the grain structure and husky notes of the moonshine

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #261 - Okanagan Spirits Maraschino

DISTILLERY NOTES

A local take on an Italian classic.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Surprised I haven’t done this yet, Okanagan Spirits maraschino liqueur is a necessary cocktail ingredient in most classic cocktails, the original bartender ketchup. Using sour and choke cherries allow it to give a breadth of pretty cherry flavors and its sweetness from honey just ties it off.

Alcohol - 36% / 72 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Rich cherry, high notes from the sour and deep stewed notes from the chokes

Taste - Complex cherry, pits, flesh and stems. Rich, aromatic and fragrant cherry blossoms.

Finish - Complex high and deep notes of cherry for days

Best Enjoyed - Classic cocktails, Aviations and Last Words for instance

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #260 - Tempo Strawberry Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

The fresh aroma and slight tang of juicy strawberries meets the creamy and luxurious vanilla notes of the Temp Renovo Gin.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

This was a curve ball flavored gin from Tempo Craft Gin made by Goodridge and Williams. Just huge candy strawberries on the nose and then on the palate, that striking citrus and juniper slices through what I thought would have been a sweet gin. This would really lengthen out and become aromatic with some tonic.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Dark watermelon red

Nose - Candied strawberries with hints of rhubarb and citrus

Taste - Cheekily unsweet, the gin notes cut through the strawberry notes and put their foot down and then flow into the fresh strawberry and rhubarb

Finish - The strawberry and rhubarb linger with the citrus and juniper notes

Best Enjoyed - With a flavored tonic, Barker and Quinn or Fevertree

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #258 - Resurrection Spirits Rye

DISTILLERY NOTES

Our Rye Whisky is made from 100% BC grown rye grain that is twice-distilled to create our lively white spirit and aged in second-fill Bourbon and Cabernet casks for three years.  It is then carefully blended and reduced to a perfect sipping strength of 42% ABV.
The layered complexities drawn from the two barrels yield a depth of flavour, providing a truly unique interpretation of Canadian Rye Whisky.
This expression of rye can be sipped on its own, over ice or combined with your favourite ingredients to make an exquisite whisky cocktail.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Been very excited for this one from Resurrection Spirits partly because I love when distilleries age up enough to release whisky and secondly I have huge respect for bartenders following their passion. This is 100% rye, double distilled and then aged in ex bourbon and Cabernet casks (knew it). This gives this one a very unique notes, not a huge spice bomb like others from rich, complex and balanced. Going to be making a sazerac with this for sure.

Alcohol - 42% / 84 proof

Color - Deep burnt copper

Nose - Soft rye spice, complex barrel oak, and hints of dry vanilla

Taste -Soft and rich rye, not a spice bomb; balanced with that rich oak and wine notes from the Cabernet barrels. Complex butterscotch and toffee, hints of vanilla and then that bold rye.

On the nose, it’s all vanilla and toffee but then on the palate it explodes with smoke; balanced with the richness of the vanillas and butterscotch. It’s a s’more over a campfire down by river.
