BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #360 - Provincial Spirits Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

One of a kind blend of botanicals with a good kick of juniper and a smooth blend of lime and lemon for a punch of citrus. A classic dry gin that is made for splashing in the deep end of cocktails.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Have done Provincial Spirits very tasty RTD's but never there straight spirit products. Their gin is very reminiscent of Roku from Japan, a big lemon bomb with underlying complexity of botanicals and earthy juniper. Fun one for your G&Ts for sure.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - Huge citrus on the nose with only slight juniper underlying

Taste - On the palate, it expands but is still very citrus forward with poignant juniper and then complex aromatic botanicals to tie it together

Finish - Big citrus peel and slight juniper berry

Best Enjoyed - White Lady or with grapefruit tonic

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #359 - Indigenous World Spirits Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

Distilled by Colin Wertz, juniper is macerated in the base spirit for 48 hours before being infused with a combination of locally foraged botanicals, including rose hips, lavender, milk thistle, sorrel, borage and black lace elderberry. Many of these ingredients were traditionally used as medicines by the local indigenous peoples.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Brand new for me is this awesome Indigenous World Spirits Gin from Kelowna. I love the space they have created in Kelowna for the winery and distillery and this gin is super interesting. Uses sorrel, borage and elderberry to create a very fantastic aroma and flavor, sweet botanicals and the elderberry is so aromatic and gorgeous, really love that.

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Clear

Nose - The elderberry just does it for me straight off the hop, spring time in the Okanagan Valley

Taste - The juniper is understated, more classic earthy tones, the stars of the show are the locally foraged ingredients, floral rosehips, that fruity elderberry and the green borage

Finish - Okanagan Valley in spring time in a glass, aromatic and floral

Best Enjoyed - Play around with a G&T with Fever Tree Elderflower

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #357 - Jones Distilling Bathtub Gin #3 Strawberry

DISTILLERY NOTES

Made with real strawberries and botanicals, our Award Winning gin uses a steeping method to get the full colour, flavour and aroma from the fruit.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Fantastic little find from Jones Distilling , there Bathtub Gin Series #3 infused with strawberries. Strawberries are actually super hard to infuse into a spirit and make it still taste like strawberries but they did a great job. Their gin is bright and botanical and the strawberry is perfectly nuanced in the mix. Soft and subtle but still there.

Alcohol - 37.5% / 75 proof

Color - light pinky yellow

Nose - Soft fresh strawberries, then Jones Distilling gin, bright juniper and subtle earthy tones

Taste - The strawberry is soft and fruity on the front of the palate and then the classic gin rolls over the palate with bright juniper and botanicals. Balanced

Finish - The poignant gin is balanced with the soft fruity strawberry

Best Enjoyed - Clover Club riff

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #355 - Shelter Point Smoke and Oak

DISTILLERY NOTES

Shelter Point’s first edition in a new series of Smoke & Oak driven small batch experimental whiskies has landed. For this expression, we smoked our own finishing barrels using a smouldering combination of applewood and locally-harvested Vancouver Island peat. Using 100% unmalted barley from on-site at Shelter Point Farm as a base, this is a whisky that breaks all the rules. This triple distilled whisky was aged in American oak ex-bourbon barrels for 5 years before a final rest in our hand-smoked finishing barrels for 6 months.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Really unique experiment from the team at Shelter Point. A triple distilled unmalted barley whisky aged for 5 years in ex Bourbon American oak casks and then finished for 6 months in an applewood and Vancouver Island peat smoked barrel. What you get is a completely unique smoke profile completely apart from their classic Smoke Point. This smoke is sweet and meaty, like a beautiful Southern BBQ, the smoke is perfectly balanced between the applewood and the funkier peat notes, I don't always love smokey whiskies but this one is fantastic.

Alcohol - 46% / 92 proof

Color - Deep chocolate brown with hints of copper

Nose - Sweet and meaty smoke on the nose, the applewood and peat are perfectly balanced

Taste - Classic Shelter Point, bright and youthful then the smoke sets in. Complex and interesting, a mix of sweet applewood smoke with meaty peat smoke; completely unique

Finish - Gorgeous BBQ smoke with bright whisky notes to balance

Best Enjoyed - Neat

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #354 - Bruinwood Distillery Earl Grey Gin

DISTILLERY NOTES

The distinctive flavours of juniper, bergamot and a hint of creaminess present a delightful take on a spirited cup of tea.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

I have done a ton of things with Bruinwood Estate Distillery in the last few weeks, I picked this little number up from Vintage Spirits and I am glad I did. The fragrant and aromatic bergamot with hints of earl grey and gin on the nose. The palate though explodes with earl grey tea, bergamot and just the slightest hints of Bruinwood gin below, not over extracted, perfect notes of tea, citrus and gin

Alcohol - 40% / 80 proof

Color - Reddish brown

Nose - Dried bergamot, aromatic earl grey, hints of vanilla with the juniper forward gin sneaking in behind

Taste - So floral and fragrant, bergamot and earl grey just explode on the palate with rich and aromatic flavors. The gin is subdued but lingers in the background

Finish - Like a perfectly brewed cup of earl grey tea

Best Enjoyed - Earl Grey MarTEAni

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #353 - Shelter Point The Forbidden #2

DISTILLERY NOTES

Shelter Point’s second Single Malt Wheat Whisky release has finally arrived. This whisky is the third different grain whisky that we have bottled. Named after our local landmark “Forbidden Plateau”, this small mountain and our whisky are similar as both shrouded in mystery. By using Wheat as the base this whisky is truly unique and unlike anything we have ever produced. This whisky was double distilled and aged in exclusively in American oak ex bourbon barrels for 6 and a half years.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Second release of the Shelter Point The Forbidden 100% wheat whisky. We don't get a lot of wheat whiskies in BC, while we make a lot of wheat based vodkas and gins, it's a rare thing for a wheat whisky. I tasted this one side by side with the first batch and while I love higher proof whiskies, I prefer batch #2. All those stone fruit, fragrant wheat notes on the nose but on the palate is where it is a game changer. Deep base notes of cacao, vanilla and toffee balance the inherent youthfulness of the wheat whisky

Alcohol - 47% / 94 proof

Color - Light golden copper

Nose - Fresh stone fruit, cut grass, sprig time air with husky wheat

Taste - Batch #2 is much more balanced than batch #1, playing into the deeper cacao and toffee notes of the barrel, with hints of vanilla and fruity stone fruit notes along with that distinct wheat note

Finish - Stone fruit, hints of cacao and toffee and finishing with wheat notes

Best Enjoyed - Neat

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #352 - Esquimalt Wine Co. Amaro Spritz

DISTILLERY NOTES

We made this by fermenting Wildflower Mead completely dry and then adding fresh grapefruit rinds that we got from GoodLife Juice as a by-product of their own grapefruit juicing! We then added dried rosemary and a touch of wormwood and quinine to amp up the bitterness. Best enjoyed chilled, preferably outside in the sun eating barbecue.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

You know the team over at Esquimalt Wine Co. is always up to new things and this one is very fun. An amaro spritz, combining super dry mead with grapefruit, rosemary and bittering herbs to create a refreshing, slightly bitter and very aromatic sparkling cocktail in a bottle. This is everyones summer sipper.

Alcohol - 6.9% / 13.8 proof

Color - Grapefruit pink

Nose - The sparkling mead is noteworthy, fragrant dry honey with hints of rosemary and then strong grapefruit peel

Taste - Much drier than I expected, grapefruit peel and rosemary are aromatic with the bitter notes in the back of the palate. The mead back bone and gorgeous sparkle round it all off

Finish - Dry and fragrant, grapefruit and rosemary for days

Best Enjoyed - Super chilled in the park

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #351 - Fernie Distillers Barrel Aged Cinder

DISTILLERY NOTES

10 months in a bourbon barrel delivers wisdom to our Cinder Liqueur.

Best served its own and savoured. Pairs delightfully with a splash of orange or pineapple. It will impart memories of fireside stories and grilled fare. Softened smoke with a hint of toasted orange peel on the nose, complexity from bourbon accompanies a full body with notes of wood and leather, an exceptionally long finish of sweet earthy smoke.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

The Cinder Liqueur from Fernie Distillers is already incredibly unique; a Lapsang tea liqueur but they one upped it and threw it in a ex bourbon barrel for 12 months. What comes out is still that poignant, rich, meaty smoke of the Lapsang but with the addition of spiced vanilla oakiness that settles in the background and adds another dimension to the already complex liqueur.

Alcohol - 32.4% / 64.8 proof

Color - Dark cola

Nose - Meaty smoke with hints of orange and then the richness of that bourbon barrel with brown sugar, vanilla and spicy oaky

Taste - The smoke is so balanced in this, meaty and rich is a little more subdued in this one, it’s balanced with the barrel notes, vanilla and brown sugar

Finish - Meaty Lapsang smoke for days, orange rind, brown sugar, spicy vanilla and oakiness

Best Enjoyed - Want to play with this in Bourbon cocktails for sure

Custom cask strength, French Pinot Noir cask finished single malt for Wee Rock Whisky Club.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

For the 350th episode, I had to do something special and luckily enough, good friend and fellow whisky nerd, hooked me up with a bottle of Shelter Point Distillery Wee Rock Whisky Club Single Malt finished in French Pinot Noir Barrels. I think I am in love, beautiful grain bass notes on the nose that sets up that spiced vanilla, dried red fruit and hints of funky Pinot Noir flavors on the palate. Maybe one of my favorite expressions from Shelter Point to date.

Alcohol - 57.5% / 115 proof

Color - Deep burnt copper

Nose - funky red fruit notes with rich French oak notes with that classic Shelter Point notes.

Taste - Classic Shelter Point grain structure but the French Pinot Noir funky red fruit balances out the heat of the alcohol content.

Finish - Long, red fruit, vanilla spice, structure French oak notes and a nice prickle in the back of your throat

BC SPIRITS NOTES

While I really enjoyed the Damson Plum Gin from Fernie Distillers and I hadn't tasted their classic expression. BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #348 - Bruinwood Distillery Spirited Horchata

DISTILLERY NOTES

Horchata is a tasty, refreshing Mexican beverage made from rice, almonds, milk, vanilla and cinnamon and spirited with a splash of our Aquasen vodka. Simply shake and pour over ice and enjoy

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Another super interesting liqueur from Bruinwood Estate Distillery combining their vodka with rice milk, vanilla and cinnamon. I love horchata and had a slushie horchata at Cafe Mexico when it first opened. This is balanced with sweetness, not too thick and rich and I think would be perfect to top up some anejo tequila in a highball.

Alcohol - 20% / 40 proof

Color - Rich cream

Nose - You automatically get the rice milk, cinnamon and a hint of vanilla

Taste - Spiked horchata, rich rice milk, dry cinnamon and sweet vanilla bean

Finish - Creamy cinnamon and vanilla finish

Best Enjoyed - Couple of ounces of good tequila topped with this

Indominable spirit. Faced with the catastrophic fires of 1904 and 1908, Fernie was rebuilt both times by people exemplifying strength and determination. Cinder is a smoky Lapsang souchong tea-infused liqueur sweetened with blue agave and a touch of orange peel.

BC SPIRITS NOTES

Very unique liqueur from Fernie Distillers, a Lapsang Liqueur. Rich and elegant smokiness is balanced on the nose with the addition of orange peel.
